Latest AFA Update

As we are moving past the half-way point in the AFA it looks like last year’s two horse race is going to turn into a three horse race with Metalface Mirren joining CarTOON United and JD Legions in the battle for the title. All 3 teams are currently tied at the top with 40 points, but JD Legions have a game in hand on CarTOON United and two games in hand on Metalface Mirren. The 3 teams records are quite different as well.

Alan Wade’s CarTOON United have the admirable trait of not losing once they are going, and having gone 36 games unbeaten last season, they are halfway to repeating that feat being 18 games unbeaten since losing at Metalface Mirren on the opening day of the season. They currently lead the way on goal difference, and with them being the current holders having pipped JD Legions on goal difference last season, their title rivals are sure to be concerned about their ominous tally of 44 goals in 19 games. However the team have some frailties at the back, and this has lead to them having too many draws when their strikers aren’t up to their normal standard.Record: W11 D7 L1.

Over at JD Legions, Richard Adams has built a good team whom have easily dispatched of the league’s lower teams without upset. However their manager’s recent absenteeism might turn out to be the team’s downfall, as proved as they were powerless to avoid going down to a 1-0 defeat at home to rivals CarTOON United. Record: W13 D1 L4

Metalface Mirren are the surprise package of the season, having been promoted from the Championship last season, few would have placed bets on them being in the title running at the start of the season, although this may have changed following their impressive 2-0 victory over holders CarTOON United on the opening day. They have since proved that this was no fluke, and with the help of some late goals, the team have held their own at the top of the league.

It has not been such a good week for Beggarwood Athletic, with results seeing them slipping down the league and going out of the cup to CarTOON United. However there have been a few bright spots for the Beggars with them giving the best showing from the AFA in the UFFA leagues, getting to the 4th round in the Game World Cup taking some big scalps along the way, the most notable being that of DR Dazzlers, before finally falling in a close game, 2-1 against The Vincibles. But more notably, Piotr Giza’s 30 yard screamer against CarTOON United earned 80% of the vote to win the inaugural Goal Of The Week competition for Beggarwood.

Opinion was more divided in the inaugural Blunder of the Week competition, but eventually it was taken by Franck Queudrue of Brainwashed United, for making not one mistake but two, first giving the ball away to the opposition striker and then deflecting the resultant shot into the back of the net.

This is the state of play in the AFA.
